The Treble Clef

Ever wonder where the names of the staff came from?

If we look at the treble clef for a moment, we can see a fancy symbol at the beginning the staff. This symbol was created to point to the G note on the staff. The “G” or “treble” clef would be used for a collection of voice or instruments whose notes are in the highest range for written music. It would be used for voice ranges including sopranos and others, and for a wide range of instruments including piano, violin, flute, guitar, and many more.

The notes on the lines of the treble clef are E, G, B, D, and F, from the bottom to the top on the staff. Many have learned the series of line note names by saying:

                                                            OR

                        E – Every                                             E – Every

                        G –Good                                              G –Good

                        B – Boy                                                B – Boy

                        D – Deserves                                       D – Does

                        F – Fudge                                             F – Fine

Really any phrase can be used.

The space notes simply spell “face” that is:

F A C E starting from the bottom.
